1 year after deadly floods, West Virginia wary of vast storm

Meteorologists expect a band of showers and thunderstorms to develop this morning, but scattered showers and storms will remain throughout the day.

Tropical Depression Cindy spread drenching rains across the upper South on Friday, prompting flash flood warnings from the MS valley to West Virginia as emergency planners urged those in its path to keep a wary eye on the large storm system. Others are in effect in the MS and OH valleys. The severe weather, which was blamed for recent coastal flooding in the Deep South, tornadoes and one death, is rumbling closer to the densely populated East Coast. The low at night will be near 71. "Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches over southern MS, southern and central Alabama, and extreme western Florida Panhandle are expected through Friday morning. This rainfall could cause life-threatening flash flooding in these areas".

One hallmark of an inland tropical system is the heightened risk of tornadoes, sometimes occurring in rather non-assuming storms, or even shower cells lacking lightning.

Remnants of Tropical Depression Cindy hit the Mid-Ohio Valley Friday evening raising concerns about local flooding. There may also be a few strong wind gusts in more intense storms.

"This will serve to act as a focusing mechanism for showers and thunderstorms", says the Climate Prediction Center in a long range outlook.

The Chambersburg area is expected to receive about 1.4 inches of rain.

National Weather Service officials in the three states said rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 millimeters) were possible, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches (150 millimeters) in some areas. "A cold front will move south across the region on Friday, bringing continued widespread rain chances".
