15 bodies found after landslide buries scores in China

More than 100 people are still missing following a landslide in China.

Wu's wife, Zhang Xiaohong, said they often sleep in other villages for fear of landslides but could not afford to move to a safer part of Mao county.

At least 15 people are dead and about 118 missing after a landslide in southwestern China buried a village, according to state media.

The landslide engulfed 62 homes in Xinmo village in Maoxian County Saturday morning, blocking a 2-km section of river and burying 1,600 meters of road.

The landslide in Xinmo village in Mao county is thought to have been triggered by heavy rain.

One day after a deadly landslide struck a village in southwest China's Sichuan province, hopes were fading for scores of people still missing after a mountainside collapsed on the remote village.

"I arrived at the site at 7:30 AM and found that the whole area was buried by the landslide", said He Dajun, a worker with Maoxian County Power Company.

Tang has relatives in Xinmo, but she said little could be done at this point.

Xinhua did not give an estimate of the number killed or injured, but it said the landslide had struck Xinmo village in Maoxian county, a remote mountainous area of north Sichuan close to the region of Tibet.

A couple and a baby were rescued and taken to hospital on Saturday.

Thousands of rescuers have come to help find victims of the disaster, which experts believe was caused by rain.

"It's the biggest landslide to hit this area since the Wenchuan quake", Wang Yongbo, an official leading one of the rescue efforts, told state broadcaster China Central Television.

"Just after we changed his diaper, we heard a big bang outside and the lights went out", said Qiao. "The government knows it's risky to live in these kinds of villages and yet they do nothing", said the elderly man, who also would not provide his name.

Authorities at the scene confirmed on Sunday that 10 bodies had been recovered, contradicting a report by the Xinhua state news agency on Saturday saying that 15 people had been confirmed killed.

The Sichuan Daily said rescuers made contact with a villager buried under the rubble who answered her cellphone when they called and burst into tears.

"Every single family has been impacted by the landslide, it's disgusting", said Sun Danxian, from a neighbouring village who was walking through the site.

A massive natural disaster hit the Sichuan province in 2008, which left about 90,000 dead or missing, and the BBC notes it also caused a landslide that killed 37 tourists.
