Bill Cosby mistrial sparks outrage

Bill Cosby mistrial sparks outrage

They had reported being deadlocked Thursday but then resumed deliberations at the request of the judge.

Bill Cosby's wife, Camille, lashed out at the judge, Steven O'Neill, accusing him of "collaborating with the district attorney", and for being "overtly arrogant".

Cosby, who turns 80 next month, was subdued and seemed nearly dazed when O'Neill declared the mistrial.

Cosby's trial ended without a verdict.

The state also tried to fortify its case with testimony from Constand's mother and another Cosby accuser, former Hollywood agent assistant Kelly Johnson, who testified she was the victim of a similar assault by Cosby.

Gloria Allred, attorney representing 33 of the more than 60 women who have publicly accused Cosby of assaulting them over 40 years, also spoke to the media on Saturday. But on Saturday, moments after the mistrial was declared, he gave an inkling of his confidence level going into Round 2.

Two women jurors who appeared to be in their 30s or 40s looked anguished when they announced the final deadlock, wiping away tears with tissues handed to them by a sympathetic young man sitting between them.

Cosby's longtime spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt, made a statement of his own, declaring that "Mr. Cosby's power is back". Cosby's legal team has now seen the prosecution's whole case and can home in on inconsistencies the second time around, they say.

They spent days asking to have testimony read back, including Constand's testimony at trial as well as the first report she made to police in 2005.

Before it could decide the awards, the jury in the civil case had to determine if O.J. Simpson was the killer.

Cosby was immediately told to expect a retrial by Montgomery County's District Attorney's Office.

After more than six days of deliberation in Norristown, Pennsylvania, jurors were unable to come to a unanimous decision beyond a reasonable doubt.

The defense's main goal in the prosecution phase of the case was to attack the credibility of Constand and the other accuser, Kelly Johnson, who had corroborating evidence in the form of her 1996 workers' compensation claim. And a federal judge dismissed a ninth accuser's case, finding her complaint inadequate. "Cosby's fame could have worked for or against him", said Gomez, depending on if jurors felt deceived or enamored. His lawyers had argued the s*x was consensual.

Agrusa, in a painstaking cross-examination, sought to portray Constand as a woman who had changed her story so often she should not be believed.

Cosby remains on $1 million bail over the three felony charges.

He co-starred in the 1960s espionage show "I Spy", the first black performer to star in a weekly American TV dramatic series. He found success with his "Fat Albert" animated TV show and starred in commercials for Jello-O pudding.

Under questioning from her lawyer, Cosby acknowledged that he had obtained several prescriptions for quaaludes in the 1970s for the goal of offering the powerful sedative to women he wanted to have sex with. He has said it was Benadryl, a cold and allergy medicine. Prosecutors suggested he drugged her with something stronger.

The case was the only one to result in a criminal trial, largely because the other accusations were too old to prosecute. He was charged shortly before the statute of limitation was set to expire.

For the last two weeks, the plaza outside the courthouse in this economically challenged county seat has been the staging area for media organizations from around the nation and Canada, and more than 100 journalists have been covering the trial and scores of members of the public, including some of the women who have accused Cosby of assaulting them, have attended.
