Boston visitors hurt in New Orleans attack; 1 hospitalized

Startling surveillance footage shows the moment two Boston-area men were brutally beaten and robbed by a group of four in New Orleans over the weekend.

Video of the attack released Sunday night shows one man punching Curran in the head and dragging him to the ground with a choke hold. Detectives arrested 21-year-old Dejuan Paul, who is thought to be one of the four men responsible for the robbery.

He suffered a fractured nose and had stitches in his face, the relative said.

The other tourist was pummeled from behind by another man and hit the ground face first, appearing to be knocked out cold. Half a minute later, two passersby walk over and attempt to help Curran and Byrne, presumably calling police.

Curran and Byrne were visiting New Orleans to attend the General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association and are information technology staff members for the association. The attacker then rummages through the motionless Byrne's pockets as two other robbers arrive on the scene, one of whom pats Curran down. The assailant continues to punch Curran as he struggles to drag Curran to the ground.

The victim remains motionless as he appears to gasp for air as his face remains against the brick sidewalk.

According to CBS Boston, one of the victims is in critical condition as of Monday, presumably the man who was knocked out, while the other was able to talk to police about what happened.

"We've made our first arrest in this case, not our last", Harrison said.

Further, Cmdr. Nicholas Gernon noted that police were out in force in the Vieux Carre on Saturday, with about 50 law enforcement officers from various agencies in the neighborhood at the time of the attack.

In Louisiana, convictions for second-degree robbery - defined as taking anything of value from someone and intentionally causing serious bodily injury - result in a minimum sentence of three years hard labor, with a maximum sentence of 40 years.

"We don't think this is a greater pattern of incidents that are occurring in the French Quarter", Gernon said, "but this is a pretty bad attack".
