Canada nurse gets life for killing 8 people in her care

But outside the courthouse, friends and families of the victims expressed anger and grief, saying they felt betrayed by a woman entrusted with the care of their parent or grandparent.

"We want to assure the public that Ontario's 78,000 long-term care residents are safe in their homes", the statement from the cabinet ministers said.

A Canadian nurse has been given a life prison sentence for killing eight elderly patients in long-term care facilities by injecting them with deadly amounts of insulin. Her crimes began in 2007 and didn't stop until she confessed to the killings at a psychiatric hospital in Toronto last fall.

A former nurse from Woodstock who murdered eight elderly patients has been sentenced to life in prison.

"I've never been so ill without knowing what was wrong", she said.

An advocacy group for Canadian seniors is demanding an inquiry into the case of killer nurse Elizabeth Wettlaufer.

The question of why Wettlaufer killed or hurt 14 people loomed large in court.

Bertram says she still suffers from severe anxiety following the attack.

"Why didn't I save her?" he wrote in his victim impact statement.

"It is a complete betrayal of your trust when a caregiver does not prolong life but rather terminates it - but you simply can not blame yourselves", Thomas said.

"You can not blame yourselves", he said.

But the granddaughter of another victim, Gladys Millard, said she doesn't have any interest in a long and drawn-out public inquiry that would sap taxpayer dollars.

While the police investigated her confession, she remained out of custody on a strict and unusual peace bond. There are a lot of old people here, she told her niece, even though Zarawinski was one of the oldest residents in the facility.

"She also noted that Wettlaufer had described Zarawinski as "'fun and feisty' - and she was".

"A lady, who at 96 years of age, still enjoyed looking her best; complete with lipstick, jewellery and nail polish", the family's joint statement said.
She said she became depressed and lost her job after his death, and that his absence has left a "void" in her life. "We were pretty sure she was going to make it to 100 and so was she".

They described the guilt, betrayal, anxiety and depression they felt as a result of Wettlaufer's actions.

"Sorry is much too small a word", she said flatly, under the watchful eye of the families, while she stood in the prisoner's box.

CBC reported that she apologised in court to her victims' families on Tuesday (local time), but her motive remains unclear.

"I caused tremendous pain and suffering and death...."

"I hardly sleep at night and feel exhausted". "It is our hope that through the inquiry process, we will get the answers we need to help ensure that a tragedy such as this does not happen again".
