Court lets travel ban mostly go into effect

Court lets travel ban mostly go into effect

"Today's unanimous Supreme Court decision is a clear victory for our national security", Trump said.

The Supreme Court's decision nonetheless marks a win for the Republican leader, who has insisted the ban is necessary for national security, despite criticism that it singles out Muslims in violation of the USA constitution.

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the travel policy does not comply with federal immigration law, including a prohibition on nationality-based discrimination.

The review of screening procedures for visa applicants from the six countries, for which the administration had sought the 90-day travel ban, should be complete before the supreme court begins its new term on October 2.

Also, for the next 120 days, refugees without strong family ties to the United States will not be allowed into the country.

The justices will hear arguments in the case in October, but that will be after what is now a 90-day order expires. Thomas said the government's interest in preserving national security outweighs any hardship to people denied entry into the country.

More than 100,000 people legally entered the USA from the six countries in fiscal 2016, which ended last September 30, according to State Department data.

The issue has been a big legal controversy in the first five months of Trump's presidency since his original order signed on January 27 sparked widespread protests days after he was sworn in.

President Trump took a victory lap Monday after the Supreme Court allowed most of his proposed travel ban from Muslim countries to take effect as it considers whether the policy overall is constitutional.

As a candidate, Donald Trump played to fears of a terrorist attack by Islamic extremists.

"My number one responsibility as Commander in Chief is to keep the American people safe", Trump said.

What does "bona fide" relationship mean? "Today's compromise will burden executive officials with the task of deciding-on peril of contempt-whether individuals from the six affected nations who wish to enter the United States have a sufficient connection to a person or entity in this country".

Hawaii later became the first state to block the president's revised travel ban order.

The matter of the travel ban had plagued his presidency from the beginning, with Trump's opponents claiming that he was motivated by bigotry and lower courts agreeing with that sentiment. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Judge Derrick Watson's ruling, and lawyers continue to make their pleas to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"By hearing this case, the [court] has an opportunity to finally put to an end this un-American travel ban", Gov.

But on June 14, Trump issued a memorandum saying the 90-day travel ban wouldn't kick in until 72 hours after the courts lift the travel-ban injunction.
