Democrats seethe after loss: 'Our brand is worse than Trump'

The Democrats lost all four of the contested elections held in districts where the incumbent Republican representative resigned to take a position in Trump's cabinets: the Fourth Congressional District in Kansas, the at-large seat representing the state of Montana, as well as the Georgia and SC seats.

Pelosi spoke out Thursday to address calls for her to step down as party leader in the House chamber.

Pelosi's defiant comments came as Democrats remained angry and divided after throwing some $30 million into a House race in Georgia on Tuesday, only to end up with a loss that wasn't even very close.

Some Democrats are so fed up with their party leadership that they are looking at ways of removing Nancy Pelosi from her post as House minority leader. "We just don't have either one of those in the present leadership".

"They always want to choose our leaders", Pelosi said Thursday. A Handel ad portrayed Ossoff - who ran on a decidedly moderate message - as a San Francisco-style liberal aligned with "Nancy Pelosi and outsiders who just don't share our priorities".

This is a longstanding process in both capitalist parties, where the "average" congressman, Democrat or Republican, is a millionaire, separated by a wall of privilege from the vast majority of their constituents, who are in a daily struggle to survive economically.

It was at the heart of their strategy to turn out reliably Republican voters who might be queasy with Trump's first five months in office, but did not want to see Pelosi and national Democrats celebrate a marquee victory in their own backyard.

"I feel extraordinarily honored and privileged to have this opportunity to represent the people of the 6th District", Handel told Channel 2 political reporter Richard Elliot.

"I think in this instance it had a motivating effect for our voters on the turnout front", Rogers said Wednesday. "How are we going to get there?"

Still, Democrats would have massive gaps to fill if they were to oust Pelosi.

In 2010, it was Pelosi and then-President Barack Obama. Since 2002, Pelosi has hauled in $568 million for House Democratic campaigns - including $141 million during the 2016 campaign cycle.

Rep. Seth Moulton echoed her complaints in a Wednesday interview with CNN's Jake Tapper.

By fiercely contesting a congressional race in the conservative Atlanta suburbs, Democrats had hoped to make an emphatic statement about the weakness of the Republican Party under President Donald Trump. "Time to move forward and win again", tweeted Joe Cunningham, a Democrat who is running against Rep. Mark Sanford in SC. But the Democratic Party is committing itself to seeking out "job creators"-i.e., wealthy capitalists, as well as business owners and doctors-in other words, candidates drawn from the top one percent, the most privileged layers in society".

Neera Tanden, the head of the progressive think tank Center for American Progress, tweeted that Democrats needed to hit back much harder. They worked perfectly in Georgia.
