Google News First Redesign In 7 Years; Massive Complaints

Google's own before after shot shows seven news articles in the old design, and only three on the new. Every card or a story will have links to other related stories. The redesigned look makes it easier for users to interact with the interface. Photos, article sources, headlines, as well as the publishing time have all been given more prominent placements.

To do this, the team adopted a card-based interface for the main news stream, for example, and added tabs that separate the main headlines of the day from local news and the personalized news feed.

Interests can be managed more easily on Google News now. Longer featured articles will appear in the Spotlight section.

A primary focus of the new site has been to improve overall transparency of the stories it features. That is, you would still see the news tools that have been added in recent years.

Local, which allows users to switch and read their local news.

Google has begun rolling out a redesigned Google News Web portal for the desktop to bring it more in line with other content that it serves on mobile devices.

But while the aesthetics may have changed, it's clear that Google is keen to been seen to provide rounded news coverage. In an article on a popular search engine website, she writes, "This is what happens when Google rolls out large-scale changes to its search algorithms, and what is in these rollouts has been the topic of many articles, tweets and Facebook posts over the years". The new block now shows the top fact check articles that have been recently published. The renewed emphasis on video, though, will likely drive more publishers to invest in that side of their business. There is also a new Video block.

The goal of the redesign was to make the News feature more streamlined and more user-friendly.

Paka starts off by stating Google News has been "designed for readability", with the adoption of the "card format" that Paka says "makes it easier to browse, scan and identify related articles about a story".

Google said "we hope this update will better connect our readers with great journalism and give them meaningful insights and context into the world of news". It will throw up daily updates from fact-checking sites like PolitFact and Snopes.
