Google tightens measures to remove extremist content on YouTube

This ranges from the thousands of employees Google has reviewing content, to technologies and systems that automatically prevent the upload and re-upload of known terrorist material, to the government and law-enforcement co-operation that the company is involved in.

Google Inc.is upping its fight against the spread of extremist content on its YouTube service by rolling out new artificial-intelligence services in conjunction with additional human oversight to stop it faster. Walker, however, admits that more still has to be done, and quickly too.

Google will increase its use of technology to identify extremist and terrorism-related videos across its sites, which include YouTube, and will boost the number of people who screen for terrorism-related content, Walker said.

Mr Johnson is expected to tell his European Union counterparts: "We all want to protect our people so we must say together that enough is enough - terrorism affects us all and we need a common approach to ensure the problem gets solved, and at a much faster pace than we are seeing right now".

"While we and others have worked for years to identify and remove content that violates our policies, the uncomfortable truth is that we, as an industry, must acknowledge that more needs to be done".

Because extremists and terrorists attack our security as well as our values, they are against exactly what make our societies open and free.

Expand YouTube's Trusted Flagger program by adding 50 independent, "expert" non-governmental organizations to the 63 groups already part of it. Google will offer grants to fund the groups.

The first step is an assurance that more technology will be used to monitor extremist and terrorism-related videos, which are often hard to identify.

'We must not let them.

Take a "tougher stance on videos that do not clearly violate our policies - for example, videos that contain inflammatory religious or supremacist content".

"This promising approach harnesses the power of targeted online advertising to reach potential Isis recruits, and redirects them towards anti-terrorist videos that can change their minds about joining", the blog post states. Tech companies can help build lasting solutions to this complex challenge.

The goal is to establish an global forum to share and develop technology, support smaller companies, and accelerate the joint effort to tackle terrorism online.

She said: "This is a very welcome step forward from Google after the Home Affairs Select Committee called on them to take more responsibility for searching for illegal content". Trusted Flagger, according to Google, provides more accurate reports than many flaggers, and help to scale the company's efforts when it comes to identifying emerging areas of concern.
