Hammond: Pragmatic approach needed for Brexit talks

Earlier this week, Mr Verhofstadt urged Theresa May to change her negotiating stance towards the bloc as he said British voters rejected a "hard" Brexit with last week's election result.

When asked if she was in floods of tears on Friday, Davis told ITV's "Good Morning Britain" show: "Not when I saw her".

In Prime Minister Theresa May's letter triggering Article 50, she states: "We believe it's necessary to agree the terms of our future partnership alongside those of our withdrawal from the European Union'".

Prior to the election, Mrs May had said that the United Kingdom would be leaving the single market and the customs union and she repeatedly insisted that "no deal is better than a bad deal".

Fighting for her political survival, May has been trying to strike a deal with a small Northern Irish Protestant party to avoid a second election that could delay Brexit talks and damage the $2.5 trillion economy. The party has refused to give a time frame for reaching a deal, though May is due in Brussels for an European Union summit on June 22-23 when she will want to show she has a solid grip on power.

We now know that at precisely 11:00 BST on Monday morning, nearly exactly a year after the Brexit referendum, the all important exit negotiations will begin.

"But it is a negotiation, and as we go into that negotiation my clear view. and I believe the view of the majority of people in Britain, is that we should prioritise protecting jobs, protecting economic growth and protecting prosperity as we enter those negotiations and take them forward".

Despite an election in which she and her Conservative Party lost their majority in Parliament, she and her surrogates had insisted in recent days that the country's plans to ask Europe for a clean break following almost a half-century of union would not be affected.

While she is ultimately expected to reach a deal, a source in the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) told Reuters that an agreement to support her minority government was not likely before next week.

Philip Hammond, Britain's finance minister, says protecting the British economy should be the main objective of upcoming negotiations over the country's exit from the European Union.

The prospect of Brexit has sent a wave of concern through Britain's business sector.

Britain has to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019.

The Department for Exiting the EU (DExEU) said it had been "crystal clear" about its approach to Brexit talks.

The statement - part of an appearance in which May also vowed that "I got us into this mess, and I'm going to get us out of it" - followed days of growing agitation from within her party over a strategy of simply soldiering on.

Meanwhile Prince Andrew, Queen Elizabeth II's second son, who works to encourage British economic growth, warned of years of "uncertainty and difficulty and upheaval" following Brexit.

"In my experience recently, businesses that look over the garden fence have gone: "Hmm, (the) grass is not quite as dark and unforgiving as you might expect"," Andrew told the BBC.
