Hawaii attorney general: Ruling allows in those with US ties

The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed part of President Trump's travel ban targeting people from six Muslim-majority countries to go into effect.

Trump said last week that the ban would take effect 72 hours after being cleared by courts. It also explicitly exempted residents and visa holders, and it removed language of preferential treatment to religious minorities of the majority-Muslim nations.

The court is allowing the ban to go into effect for foreign nationals who lack any "bona fide relationship with any person or entity in the United States".

Protests erupted around the USA in opposition to Mr Trump's Muslim travel ban. The court's example: family members, university students, and those with USA job offers. Earlier this month, the Ninth Circuit ruled that Trump exceeded his authority by suspending "the entry of more than 180 million people on the basis of nationality", citing his own tweets as evidence of discriminatory intent. "The Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original travel ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to (the Supreme Court)". I am also particularly gratified that the Supreme Court's decision was 9-0'.

Most people with visas looking to travel from the affected countries to the US who wish to bypass the partially-reinstated restrictions would need to demonstrate a connection to either an organization or an individual in order to be allowed entry. "I want people who can love the United States and all of its citizens, and who will be hardworking and productive", Trump added.

Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin speaks at a news conference about the Supreme Court's decision on President Donald Trump's travel ban, Monday, June 26, 2017, in Honolulu. USA Today said that it is unclear whether or not the decision was truly unanimous because the court issued a "per curiam" opinion that no one signed.

Three of the justices wanted to grant the government the right to carry out the travel ban in it's entirety, rather than lifting the injunction partially.

The court, which issued an unsigned opinion on the matter, said it would hear the case when it reconvened in October.

The president's executive order initially resulted in protests as well as chaos and confusion at Logan Airport and airports across the country. Opponents say it targets Muslims in violation of federal law and the Constitution.

Why is the ban being allowed?

. "I think it's safe to expect more litigation as people file lawsuits".

"In terms of next steps, the government's reviewing the decision and determining how to proceed going forward. We believe it will not help in confronting terrorism and extremism, but rather will increase feelings among the nationals of these countries that they are all being targeted", Ahmed al-Nasi, an official in Yemen's Ministry of Expatriate Affairs, told Reuters.
