The town also is doing a preemptive larvicide program on public and provate roadway catch basins.

"As those waters are receding, they're exposing pools that are really having a lot of mosquitoes in them", he said.

The Wisconsin Division of Public Health will continue surveillance for West Nile virus until the end of the mosquito season.

West Nile cases in town are sparse. During 2002, the state documented its first human infections and 52 cases were reported that year. "Sometimes we see a couple".

Despite efforts to control the pests, officials say mosquito populations are quadrupling in some areas around the Boise River each week. The only human case reported nearby was in Milford.

"You know the precipitation we saw in the spring, we're still not entirely sure how that's going to play out this year but we do anticipate some level of West Nile Virus within our district boundaries this year", said Bonkrude. It can not be spread person to person or directly from birds to people, he said.

When bitten by an infected mosquito, most people are able to fight off the infection and experience either mild symptoms, such as headache and fever, or no symptoms at all. Most people who become ill recover. At its most serious, it can cause permanent neurological damage and can be fatal.

However, there are risks.

Residents should take care to avoid mosquito bites, and wear insect repellent with DEET, especially around areas with standing water. General symptoms occur suddenly between 5 - 15 days following the bite of an infected mosquito and range from a slight fever, headache, rash, swollen lymph nodes, nausea, malaise and eye pain, to the rapid onset of severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, disorientation, severe muscle weakness, gastrointestinal symptoms, coma or death.

Overall, West Nile is most prevalent in the late summer and early fall.
