Justin Thomas makes US Open history

Justin Thomas makes US Open history

Thompson won the Kingsmill Championship last month in Virginia for her eighth LPGA Tour title after losing the ANA Inspiration in a playoff after being penalized four strokes for a rules violation reported by a television viewer.

After Justin Thomas' eight-foot eagle putt on No. 18 Saturday, his celebration was simple.

Fleetwood, who tied for 27th in his only previous U.S. Open in 2015, has moved the ball smoothly through the long, links-style layout, illustrated by his average of just 1.54 putts per hole, tied for fifth-best in the tournament. That's what made it easy. I still feel like I've got some game. "Obviously, today I definitely had something to show for it". And there were some ridiculous fireworks on Saturday. On the card were nine birdies and the eagle on 18.

The 26-year old Reed was 125/1 to win the U.S. Open heading into Round 3 and while he has plenty of work to do sitting four shots back, the Superbook has improved his odds to 25/1. Before that, he was a U.S. Junior champion in 2003, a three-time All-American with the University of Georgia Bulldogs and a member of two winning U.S. Walker Cup teams, in 2005 and '09. Or that Mickelson never made it to Erin Hills, opting instead to attend his daughter's high school graduation?

But the wind hasn't kicked up over three rounds, and overnight rains have kept things soft, allowing shots to hit the green and hold, the way Thomas' 3-wood did from 310 yards out on the 18th hole. They each hit their first shot into the rough.

But a missed putt cost him a chance at stand-alone history.

"It's going to be a really cool day for someone tomorrow", said Fowler, who has posted six top-10 finishes in majors during his career, including a second place finish at the 2014 US Open. "He's upstairs and I'm down in the basement area, so it shouldn't get too physical". Imagine how good he could have been with a snack.

KEY STATISTIC: In 116 U.S. Opens to date, only six players had ever reached 10 under or better.

But Oostihuizen knows how quickly momentum can swing at a U.S. Open. He told me that his agent was Mac Barnhard, who represents Davis. I've kind of stayed on the safe side there.

Asked if achieving the latter feat was on his mind, the world number 50 replied: "No, I don't think that's a productive way to think about it". "I just knew he was going to make it".

Greg Norman and Vijay Singh did it twice, for 31 rounds of 63 in total. It's time for him to prove he has what it takes to win a major championship.

And he'll likely have to do it in a manner that most of the past winners of the big trophy rarely would have considered - by making birdies.

At 24, he might not have a deep well of experience to draw upon in major championships, but he knows how to follow a historic round with another.

And yet, Thomas won't even walk to the first tee box tomorrow with the lead.

Justin Thomas watches his tee shot on the third hole during the third round of the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis. on Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Fowler likes his chances of breaking his major duck on Sunday. We already gave you a quick rundown of the 54-hole leader Brian Harman, so here's another one of Tommy Fleetwood, who heads into Sunday one shot back.

"Nine (under) is pretty darn good", Fowler said after his round.

"I've got a good plan for this course".

Forget about par being a good score in the U.S. Open. One of them will on Sunday. No one will mistake Erin Hills for Baker's Bay. He etched it in the history books with a tour de force performance.

He ended up with two birdies and no bogeys over his last five holes.
