Microsoft confirms Windows 10 source code has leaked

This has been somewhat controversial for Microsoft's relationship with the security industry, as demonstrated by Kaspersky's recent European Union antitrust complaint against Microsoft for their somewhat aggressive moves with Windows Defender, bundles with Windows 10, to make sure users have continuous antivirus protection.

Many of these themes were created back in the days when Windows 7 was the latest version of Microsoft's operating system and were just brought up to date so they worked with Windows 10 and subsequently were made available for in the Creators Update. The folks over at The Register reported that 32 TB of non-public data taken from Microsoft's network was uploaded to Beta Archive.

It of course also provides another reason for security companies to complain about Microsoft, but hopefully, recent incidents such as WannaCry will make it clear security is too important to leave up to IT admins.

Interestingly, Beta Archive disputes a number of the claims made by The Register.

MICROSOFT HAS admitted that huge swathes of Windows source code have been stolen by a member of Beta Archive. The file hosting site says that while the folder containing these files was uploaded to its FTP servers, it's been since removed and there are no plans to restore it. The data package contained 12 Windows builds, each about 100 MB in size.

Included in the leak were some builds of Windows 10 Creators Update (that thing that most of us are still waiting for), some early ARM builds of Windows 10 as we move closer to Continuum, and the Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile Adaption Kit.

With all this mind, this leak is probably not that big of a deal.

General Manager of crisis management at Microsoft, Adrienne Hall said: "In reviewing the updates for this month, some vulnerabilities were identified that pose elevated risk of cyberattacks by government organisations, sometimes referred to as nation-state actors, or other copycat organisations". It's less likely, then, that there will be significant ramifications for the security of Windows systems worldwide.
