Nifty scales 9700, Sensex hits fresh all-time high of 31430

Some level of circumspection ahead of tomorrow's RBI policy review outcome resulted in profit-booking.

Overseas, European stocks edged lower as investors eye an upcoming monetary policy meeting from the European Central Bank (ECB) and react to the terrorist attack in London over the weekend, just a few days ahead of a general election.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex), was trading flat at 11.51 points or 0.04 % lower soon after opening. "Asian stocks, too, traded in red".

Indian markets continued to rise for the third day on Tuesday. Shanghai Composite Index down 0.14 percent. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index closed 0.95 per cent lower.

In broader markets, The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index provisionally rose 0.15 per cent.

Of the 30-share Sensex pack, 15 showed up in the green.

Sector-wise, realty rose 0.77 per cent followed by infra 0.54 per cent, IT 0.48 per cent, private banks 0.44 per cent, energy 0.42 per cent, banks 0.38 per cent and auto 0.24 per cent. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index provisionally advanced 0.65 per cent. The decline in both the indices was higher than the Sensex fall in percentage terms.

A host of significant developments across the globe, including rising tensions in West Asia after major Gulf states severed ties with Qatar, the coming testimony of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, besides forthcoming snap elections in Britain and the European Central Bank meeting restrained the domestic market from advancing.
