Philando Castile Family Reaches $3M Settlement In Death

The verdict, which sparked renewed protests in Minnesota, was the first of a string of three trials in one week in which United States prosecutors failed to secure convictions of police officers in questionable shootings - revealing the difficulty of prosecuting such cases, even with video evidence.

So it is with the death of Philando Castile. Eighteen people were arrested Saturday after blocking a major highway in angry protests after a police officer was acquitted over the shooting of a black motorist whose last moments were captured on video.

The mother of Philando Castile, the black motorist killed last summer by a police officer from St. Anthony, Minn., reached a almost $3 million settlement Monday with that city.

What we know is that Yanez shot Castile in a highly publicized incident caught on video previous year and that he was acquitted of all charges related to the shooting, including second-degree manslaughter and that it all seemed to be preventable and unnecessary. Officer Jeronimo Yanez pulled Castile over and subsequently shot him when he learned Castile had a gun. In her livestream video, Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, says that Castile was reaching for his wallet, not his gun. Today, we find out his family will receive a $3 million settlement pending court approval. In a statement city officials handling the matter said: "the parties moved expeditiously to resolve potential civil claims resulting from this tragedy in order to allow the process of healing to move forward". The settlement will be paid with insurance money, not taxpayer funds, the statement said. It continues, "With resolution of the claims the family will continue to deal with their loss through the important work of the Philando Castile Relief Foundation".

Hatchett has been the attorney in touch with Valerie Castile about the settlement, Bennett said. City Manager Mark Casey did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Philando Castile family reaches $3M settlement in death

Last week, a US$1.5 million settlement was reached in the case of Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager who was killed by a white officer in Ferguson, Missouri three years ago. That settlement came almost three years after the death of Brown, whose parents sued the city.

One of Mrs Castile's legal representatives said she did not want a trial to "exacerbate and reopen bad wounds". He also said the city of St. Anthony has a commitment to make positive changes to their police department.

Noel said that attorneys for the Castile family began talks with the League before Yanez went on trial May 30, and that the settlement was finalized after dashcam footage of the shooting was made public last week following Yanez's acquittal. He fired, Yanez testified, out of fear for his life. Yanez also said that he had smelled marijuana in Castile's vehicle and factored that in his quick decision to fire. Through the Collaborative Reform Initiative, the City and residents are working to improve trust between the police department and the communities it serves.

The status of that separation is unknown. On Monday, she reached a near $3 million settlement from the city of St. Anthony, Minn., over the killing of her son by a city police officer.
