Presidential spokesman says Israel destroys any chance of peace

"He calls for continued Israeli security control over the West Bank and recognition of a so-called "Jewish state" while at the same time voicing a desire for a "genuine peace process", the ministry said.

While neither ethnicity was optimistic about peace prospects under US President Donald Trump, Jewish Israelis were most wary about his intentions, with less than five percent sure he would not pressure Israel.

"They are a message to the U.S. administration and to the worldwide community that Israel is not ready to reach peace based on global law and resolutions", Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina wrote in a statement.

It has been 50 years since the Arab-Israeli war of June 1967, or Six-Day War, radically changed the map of the Middle East.

The assertion came in response to remarks made by Netanyahu on Monday, in which he said Israel must be given full security control over the West Bank "in any future agreement" with the Palestinians.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded that the Palestinians, who view prisoners as national heroes, stop paying stipends to them and their families, and US lawmakers have warned that Palestinian funding could be cut off unless Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas halts the practice.

The so-called "occupied territories" are, in fact, territories in dispute, not illegally occupied, and after failed peace efforts in 1967, Israel has tried to forge peace with its Arab neighbors on multiple occasions.

At Monday's event, Netanyahu said: "We seek peace with our neighbours, a real peace, a peace that will last for generations".

"Ending the occupation that began in 1967 and achieving a negotiated two-state outcome is the only way to lay the foundations for enduring peace that meets Israeli security needs and Palestinian aspirations for statehood and sovereignty", Xinhua quoted Guterres statement released on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the start of the Arab-Israeli Six Day War.

The remainder is under varying degrees of limited Palestinian autonomy.

During Trump's meeting with Abbas in Bethlehem the two leaders had a heated exchange, said a senior Palestinian official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The Palestinian delegation was then able to clarify the situation", he added.
