Rainbows, and politics too, at pride parade

Rainbows, and politics too, at pride parade

People cheer for marchers walking down 5th Ave.in the annual New York Gay Pride Parade.

As the same NY parade started, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced that artist Anthony Goicolea was chosen to design the first official monument to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people commissioned by the state of NY.

Organizers said they were hopeful that the parade would be allowed to go ahead this year because it fell on the first day of Eid.

Check out the roundup below for some of the most powerful signs from this year's NYC Pride march and other LGBTQ pride events across the country.

"We are not alone, we are not wrong, we have not given up", the Pride Committee's statement said Sunday.

"I am starting to feel more like I need to have the security of my culture and my people around me to feel protected and safe". However, in one of the biggest LGBT events in the mainly Muslim region, the 2014 Pride parade had drawn tens of thousands of people in Istanbul. So does the involvement of corporate sponsors that benefit from mass incarceration and the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, she said.

He has repeatedly infuriated activists with his conservative comments on sex and family planning, but has generally steered clear of commenting publicly on gay issues. In Columbus, Ohio, four people were arrested after a group set out to protest violence against minority LGBT people and the recent acquittal of a police officer in the shooting death of Philando Castile, a black man, during a traffic stop.

Activist Mustafa said she was banned from walking through the city centre. On Friday, organizers apologized. But pro-LGBT campaigners promised to march anyway. "Our security will be provided by showing how strong, how crowded, how fearless we are".

Activists rallied on social media around a Turkish hashtag for 'We March'. A police helicopter also hovered above the square to monitor the events. Parade organizers said members of Alperen were among those detained by police. "We've come a long way since then". This year's theme, "We Are Proud", speaks to the LGBT community's unwavering ability to rise and be proud, even in the face of the existing political environment.

The goal for the organizers was to make sure Washington knows the LGBTQ community will not back down. But they will continue after Pride ends.

"Things are changing quickly and we have to take a stand and be noticed", Reyes' husband, Paul Brady, said.
