Rising winds set to provide fiendish test in US Open final round

Rising winds set to provide fiendish test in US Open final round

Brian Harman's quest to win his first major championship came up a little short Sunday.

T5. Xander Schauffele (-10): You might not be able to pronounce his name, but you should probably learn since the PGA Tour rookie has shown he is going to be around for a while with his play at Erin Hills. By the time he parred the par-5 giant No. 18 with a two-footer, tied Rory McIlroy's 16-under-par record from Congressional in 2011 and fist-pumped understatedly a few times, he had cast himself as a top-tier threat.

Wind was supposed to be one of the main defenses at Erin Hills, which is the longest U.S. Open course in history but also has the widest fairways the tournament has seen.

Tommy Fleetwood, who played alongside Koepka and closed with a 72 to finish fourth, played the Challenge Tour a year before Koepka arrived. JT had three bogeys and two pars in his first five holes and went on to miss a ton of greens en route to a 75.

The muscular American, who started the day one back of the lead, tamed his nerves and a wind-whipped Erin Hills carding six birdies, including two to kick-start his round, against a single bogey for a five-under 67 to finish four clear of compatriot Brian Harman (72) and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (66).

"Being an amateur in the U.S. Open is very cool", Scheffler said.

Morgan was at 9-under 135 after two rounds and became the first player to reach 10-under par in the U.S. Open with a 30-foot birdie putt on the third hole of the third round. Exactly half of the 68-man field played it under par as three eagles and 31 birdies produced a scoring average of 3.515.

The gusts tapered off from the morning, but they still were making Erin Hills play more hard than it had all week.

T9. Justin Thomas (-8): The lingering memory from Thomas' 2017 U.S. Open will always be his 63 on Saturday, not only because of its historical relevance but because things got real shaky on Sunday in a hurry as he played his way out of contention.

Koepka, whose caddie Ricky Elliott is from Portrush in Northern Ireland, becomes the seventh first-time major victor in succession, a run stretching back to Jason Day's victory in the 2015 US PGA Championship. He finished the tournament +1 after his best performance on Sunday, hitting three birdies on the back nine.

However, the 26-year-old from Southport then bogeyed the sixth after hitting a poor chip across the green and dropped another shot on the eighth after firing his approach over the green. Koepka finally took the lead with a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 8.

It was only fitting that Koepka left Erin Hills with yet another record matched or broken.

That put him in Sunday's final pairing - a 2:54 p.m. tee time - and Thomas, an early bird, said it was "bizarre for me", hanging around the house he shared with Fowler, trying to avoid the phone, the TV, all that was being written and said about him until it was time to go to the course. At this year's Masters, he entered the final round trailing by one but shot a 76 and was far from the drama between Garcia and Justin Rose. Kite says "I don't anticipate this being a bloodletting". He was only two behind when he made the turn, but bogeys on the 12th and 15th holes - and no birdies until No. 18 - ended his hopes.

Nobody in the top 16 on the leaderboard has won a major.
