Russian navy launches missile strikes at ISIS targets In Syria

Two Russian Navy frigates and a submarine has fired six Kalibr cruise missiles on Islamic State targets in Syria. Operations were suspended earlier this week, after a USA fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane.

"It won't be long before you start to see the operations again", he told reporters in the Australian capital, Canberra. The official did not elaborate on the exact date.

Earlier this week, the ADF said it would suspend operations after Russian Federation warned members of the USA -led coalition that any aircraft found west of the Euphrates River would be considered a "target" after an American F/A-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian SU-22 on Sunday.

The Russian Aerospace Forces have destroyed the remaining Daesh positions in Syria following sea launches of six Kalibr cruise missiles, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.

"It displayed hostile intent and advanced on Coalition forces", the statement said.

After announcing a temporary halt of all air operations in Syria earlier this week, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) will resume its right to undertake airborne missions, the Department of Defence announced Thursday.

The Russian military had informed Turkey and Israel in advance of Russian Navy Kalibr cruise missile launches on Daesh targets in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.

On Sunday, a U.S. Navy F/A-18 warplane shot down a Syrian Air Force Su-22 that had dropped bombs near Syrian opposition forces.

Although the US Central Command said the plane was downed "in collective self-defense of coalition-partnered forces", accusing the Syrian government of attacking the US-allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Damascus said the plane was carrying out operations against IS when it was targeted.

In a statement, the Defense Ministry said operations had been "temporarily ceased" as a "precautionary measure" but would be resumed in "due course".
