Theresa May orders full public inquiry into London fire

Theresa May orders full public inquiry into London fire

Alongside both police and fire investigations into the blaze, she has promised to set up a public inquiry.

"It is human nature for most of us - if we know there's a fire, start moving and get out", said Robert Solomon of the National Fire Protection Association, a USA -based organization that studies fire safety globally.

Nadir, 24, who has friends in Grenfell Tower, said: "At least she (Theresa May) could've met the victims, (Jeremy) Corbyn was a good man. he came and met the people". Sixty-nine others were injured, with 17 in critical care.

"Not just the immediate recovery of the bodies we have found but the full search of that whole building we could be talking weeks we could be talking months - it is a very long process".

The area surrounding the council-owned tower has been plastered by desperate relatives with pictures of the missing, from grandparents to young children, and large numbers of volunteers were assisting survivors.

"It will go to establish the answers of what happened in the fire and how it spread, it will look at the building itself, it will look at the refurbishment as well".

"She wanted an entirely controlled situation in which she didn't use her humanity", former cabinet minister Michael Portillo told the BBC. He seems to have been greeted with a warm reception - while Sadiq Khan had things thrown at him when he arrived for a similar meet-the-people visit.

"How many children died? What are you going to do about it?" a boy asked Khan, as the mayor tried to stop tensions rising further. What's more, aluminium has high conductivity - so the cladding itself could have heated up very quickly, failing to prevent the fire from travelling through the windows and up the exterior of the block from one storey to another.

The Syrian Solidarity Campaign said on its Facebook page that Mohammed Al Haj Ali, a refugee from Syria studying engineering in London, was one of those who had been killed. Many of these residences are owned by wealthy people overseas who buy London property for investment or residency purposes, but don't live in the property.

"It was so preventable, and that's why we're so angry", said Alia Al-Ghabban, a veterinary receptionist who lives on the estate.

The focus of criticism centres on the cladding fitted to external walls on the 1970s concrete block as part of a £8.7 million refit ($11 million, 9.9 million euros) completed past year.

While the blaze has prompted an outpouring of generosity, with many people donating provisions and clothes, it has also unleashed rage at the authorities as the charred tower was cast as a deadly symbol of a deeply divided society.

He added: "We as the police, we investigate criminal offences - I am not sitting here and saying there are criminal offences that have been committed, that's why you do an investigation, to establish it".

Here, experts have pointed out that although the cladding is also sold in New Zealand, only fire-resistant versions should have been used on residential buildings. "But even if they are, smoke and fire will spread through the joints and connections", he said.
