Trump Calls for Overhaul of Government's Outdated Computer Systems

The council, which includes the CEOs of some of the country's biggest tech businesses, is slated to discuss with the president ways to modernize the federal government's technology infrastructure while also improving the way it handles cybersecurity issues.

"We have approximately $3.5 trillion of market value in this room - but that's nearly the exact number that we've created since my election", he said to laughter from the attendees, which shows what sort of brown-nosing is going on at this event.

After listing examples of backward technology in government, such as the Pentagon's use of floppy disks, he said their main goal is to improve the day-to-day lives of average citizens.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the administration was focusing on technology this week. Trump has assigned him a daunting portfolio ranging from increasing government efficiency to Middle East peace to relations with China and Mexico.

The gathering is the first event for a technology-focused effort within the White House Office of American Innovation.

The executives are part of the so-called American Technology Council that Trump formed in May to support efforts to modernize the U.S. government.

The four-hour event was the first major meeting of the American Technology Council, a new group that Trump commissioned in May that's being led by Jared Kushner, the president's senior adviser and son-in-law. It was one of Trump's latest initiatives to modernize the USA government, which spends $80 billion annually on information technology (IT) and employs approximately 113,000 It professionals.

However, the White House still managed to gather CEOs from Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Palantir, IBM, Intel, and Oracle, among others. In December, then-president-elect had invited executives to a roundtable discussion at Trump Tower. Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt. It was the second group meeting with the President since the election that several of the CEOs had attended. But numerous information systems used by federal agencies are outdated and inefficient, according to two senior administration officials who briefed reporters about the meeting on condition of anonymity.

Following Trump's June 1 decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accords, Tesla TSLA.O CEO Elon Musk and Walt Disney DIS.N CEO Robert Iger stepped down from White House advisory panels. As of the end of May, one-third of all stock market gains this year have come from just five companies: Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, Google and Apple.
