Complicating matters further, ABC News reported on Friday that Rosenstein was considering recusing himself from involvement in Mueller's investigation, handing responsibility for resources, personnel and possible prosecutions to associate attorney general Rachel Brand.

Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein submitted a widely circulated memo to the President last month raising concerns over Mr. Comey's performance, but Mr. Trump later asserted that he had already made the decision himself to fire Mr. Comey.

Also, it was Rosenstein who appointed Robert S. Mueller III as the special counsel to lead that investigation after Comey was sacked.

He was also involved into the Iran-Contra and the Watergate investigations.

The special counsel appointed to investigate Russian influence in last year's US presidential campaign is now examining whether US President Donald Trump tried to obstruct justice, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday evening.

Trump has vehemently denied any collusion between himself or any of his associates and Russian Federation.

"The President was not confirming the investigation".

In an interview with NBC's Lester Holt on May 11, Trump said he was "going to fire [Comey] regardless of recommendation" from Rosenstein and Sessions.

On June 15, Vice President Mike Pence, who headed the Trump transition team, confirmed that he, too, had hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the probe. "That's undemocratic on its face and a blatant violation of the president's oath of office".

Rosenstein serves under Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Gingrich told The Associated Press in an interview this week that his feelings about him began to change after Comey testified to a Senate panel that he had leaked his personal memos in order to trigger the appointment of a special counsel.

"He's driving this", the White House official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss West Wing internal deliberations.

According to Thursday's Post report, investigators have also been looking into the financial dealings of other Trump associates, including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and former foreign-policy adviser Carter Page.

The White House has said the president "has never asked Mr Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn".

"A lot of people have tried to make the case - including the president - that this means that the collusion investigation is being abandoned", Entous said.
