Trump Lawyer Says President Isn't Under Investigation, Despite Tweets

Special counsel Robert Mueller expanded his investigation into Russia's interference in our election to include Trump himself for potential obstruction of justice, in relation to his firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

While aides have advised Trump to stay off Twitter, the president continued to weigh in on the widening legal investigations Sunday.

On Friday, Trump tweeted, "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

In a two-part tweet posted before 7 a.m., Trump wrote: "The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".

Your afternoon shot of politics, sent straight from the desk of Joshua Miller.

"The president is not under investigation by the special counsel", Sekulow told NBC's Chuck Todd.

"The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to the Washington Post", he said.

But Sekulow claimed the president wasn't referring to an actual investigation in the message, but instead a news report about one.

"He's being investigated for taking the action that the attorney general and the deputy attorney general recommended him to take, by the agency that recommended he take the action". The president "wants people to say that", he said.

"I can say categorically that the collusion, the cooperation, aspect of the investigation is not over".

Senator Marco Rubio, who lost the Republican primary election to Trump, called for a "full and credible investigation".

Trump has hinted that he may have taped conversations with Comey - in which the ex-FBI chief says the president pressured him for his loyalty and on the Russian Federation investigation while also urging him to drop a probe into former national security advisor Michael Flynn. Notification is often provided if a person has become a "target", meaning that charges could be imminent, but is not generally provided at the early stages of an investigation.

Jay Sekulow, a lawyer who is part of a team hired by Trump to deal with allegations of collusion by his campaign with Moscow, appeared to contradict Trump's statement on Twitter on Friday that he was being investigated for firing his Federal Bureau of Investigation director last month.

Sekulow said that Trump would address the issue of the tapes - whose very existence have been the source of much speculation - in the "week ahead".

Trump advisers describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy.

"But it's nearly like it's who he has been his whole life", Gingrich added. He is infuriated, and legitimately, in my judgment, by this whole Russian baloney. "There's a lot of information yet to go". Here is what you just said: The president made the decision before - let's assume for the sake of argument there was all kinds of decisions being discussed, but this crystalized that decision.

Yet Trump's tweets in recent days condemning the actions of his own Justice Department have reached an intense level, revealing the president's increasing agitation about the probe and the attention it has drawn. Last week he described the concerns about Russian influence in USA elections as a "phony" story.
