-Day after missing the cut.

Jordan Spieth failed to gain much ground on the leaderboard Friday, as he shot a one-under 71 in the second round of the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin. Olin Browne and Jason Gore were part of a 36-hole tie at Pinehurst No. 2.

A rain-softened course was protected by some fearsome pin positions as the third round of the US Open got under way at Erin Hills on Saturday.

Before the tournament started, there had been quite a bit of chatter that the USGA might play some holes from the forward tees.

It's the most players tied after 36 holes of the US since 1974 at Winged Foot, only the names from 43 years ago resonate more than today - Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer. They were a combined 19-over for the tournament. That's been the case all week at Erin Hills.

In fact, that's 15 more than the top 18 players on the leaderboard going into the weekend.

Joined by Americans Brian Harman and Brooks Koepka on seven-under, the leaderboard for the second major championship of the year has concertinaed up meaning any of the 68 players to have made the cut for the weekend have a chance of scooping the title.

That was a 10-shot improvement on his second round and left the 26-year-old on eight under par as he seeks to turn his Ryder Cup heroics into individual success. He dedicated his first victory, the 2013 Johnnie Walker Championship, to his dog, Maisy. Fowler is at No. 9 in the world ranking.

"There are a lot of things I could have done better today, obviously", McIlroy said.

Rickie Fowler never came seriously close to a bogey on his way to a 7-under 65, which matched the U.S. Open record to par for the opening round. He tied for 27th at Chambers Bay two years ago. Among those trying to chase him down is Paul Casey of England, who was one shot behind. He's now made four straight cuts in U.S. Opens, and is in position to finish in the top-20 for the fourth straight time as well. Scottie Scheffler, who just finished his junior year at Texas, had a 69 and amateur Cameron Champ had a 70 in his U. S. Open debut. I felt really comfortable and I was enjoying being out there. "It's not Sunday afternoon", he said. The golf course is not going to change, but if you approach it as a challenge, then you're in with a chance.

A whopping eight players are at 6 under, including world No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama and Louis Oosthuizen. Results are not what will make this a great week at Erin Hills for the 50-year-old Stricker.

His 7- under par tied the record to par for the first round of a U. S. Open held by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf, who each shot 7- under 63 at Baltusrol in 1980.

The opening round was without Phil Mickelson for the first time since 1993. Mickelson has won every major but the U.S. Open.

McIlroy has birdied three of his last four holes. "If you read my post, it says I love the design". As the story goes, Johnson replied, "No, you didn't".

OK, this is his first U.S. Open.

Johnson said he plans to take four weeks off.
