US shoots down another pro-regime drone in Syria

Australia's government on Tuesday said it suspended operations in Syria amid rising tensions with Russian Federation after the United States shot down a Syrian regime jet.

With the skies over Syria growing increasingly crowded, a statement from the Australian Defence Department released in the capital, Canberra, said that "Australian Defence Force protection is regularly reviewed in response to a range of potential threats".

An American F/A-18E Super Hornet shot down the Syrian SU-22 as it "dropped bombs near SDF fighters" south of the town of Tabqa, said the US-led coalition.

The worldwide coalition backs the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led alliance that has been fighting against the Islamic State since 6 June in al-Raqqa, the terror organisation's main stronghold in Syria since it established its self-proclaimed caliphate in 2014.

As a result, it said, Russia has stopped using a key "de-confliction" communication channel set up to avoid conflict between U.S. and Russian forces in Syria.

A US F-15E fighter jet shot down a pro-Syrian regime drone near At Tanf, Syria, on Monday, two U.S. officials told CNN, the third downing of a pro-regime aircraft this month. Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, a paramilitary force in charge of the country's missile program, said it launched six Zolfaghar ballistic missiles from the western provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan.

"We can not only fight ISIS effectively - we are going to come into conflict with others". The U.S. recently deployed a truck-mounted missile system in Syria as Iranian-backed forces cut off the advance of the U.S. -supported rebels along the Iraqi border.

A USA official told AFP the pilot of the Syrian plane appeared to have ejected before the jet was hit, though his fate was unknown. The truce was meant to be extended but now appears to have collapsed.

The U.S. military has repeatedly warned forces fighting on Assad's side to stay away from a "deconfliction zone", agreed with Russian Federation, near a garrison used by U.S. special forces and U.S. -backed militia around Al Tanf.

Israeli security officials said Monday they were studying the missile strike to see what they could learn about its accuracy and capabilities.

The truce that went into effect Saturday came after some of the worst fighting in months between rebels and pro-government forces.

"The situation is back as it was in Daraa city and fighting is ongoing", said Daraa-based opposition activist Ahmad al-Masalmeh.

More than 320,000 people have been killed and millions more displaced since Syria's conflict broke out in March 2011. But she expressed alarm at the United States shooting down the Syrian jet and attacking militias at Al Tanf without a larger strategy.
