Verify: Understanding the Russian Federation investigation

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations-under investigation both by Congress and the FBI-that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favor, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.

Top Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein expressed concern that Trump may try to fire both Mueller and Rosenstein, warning "he's in for a rude awakening" if he thinks he can shut down the investigation. "That's undemocratic on its face and a blatant violation of the president's oath of office".

Aides have counseled the president to stay off Twitter and focus on other aspects of his job.

The President's tweet - seeming to confirm the probe based on news reports - came as a surprise to the President's own legal team, according to a person briefed on the matter.

"She added that she was "increasingly concerned" Mr Trump will fire both [investigative special counsel] Robert Mueller and Rosenstein".

A Justice official said Rosenstein was motivated in part because of frustration that recent news stories have unfairly brought on a torrent of "leak" accusations against the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mueller's team.

The department would not comment on the record on whether Trump, who has repeatedly complained about leaks on the case, requested the statement.

Regardless of the chaos that could ensue in the leadership of the Justice Department, Mueller's investigation appears insulated, and much of the work of the department done by us attorneys across the country will continue, Cramer said.

Rosenstein told a congressional panel this week that he was not in favour of firing Mueller without just cause. If Rosenstein were out of the picture, responsibility for overseeing Mueller's investigation - and deciding his fate - would fall to Rachel Brand, the department's associate attorney general.

Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Mr Comey's sacking, many in Mr Trump's orbit, including his son Donald Jr and adviser Newt Gingrich, have deemed Mr Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal.

The Trump administration initially said Mr Rosenstein's letter was the reason the President fired Mr Comey on May 9, but Mr Trump later said he did so because of the "Russia thing". John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, told reporters Thursday that Rosenstein shouldn't recuse himself.

Rosenstein has said privately he may need to recuse himself from matters relating to the Russiaprobe because he could become a witness in the investigation, ABC News reported on Friday. That left Rosenstein in charge of the Russian Federation probe.

A Trump's transition official confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent on Thursday.

The US president has denied trying to influence the investigation but has acknowledged in an interview that Russian Federation was on his mind when he dismissed Comey.

The White House has directed questions to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

In another indication of the seriousness of the probe, Michael Cohen, a personal attorney to Trump, said he has retained attorney Stephen Ryan, a former assistant U.S. attorney, to represent him in the ongoing probes.

The development marks another expansion of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe, whose scope had previously been limited to uncovering whether Trump's campaign colluded with the Kremlin during the 2016 election. Cohen has received a subpoena from one of the congressional committees looking into the Russian Federation issue.
