Weekend Box Office: 'Transformers 5' Opens to Franchise-Low $69M

Weekend Box Office: 'Transformers 5' Opens to Franchise-Low $69M

Variety reports that the film opened to $69.1 million over a five-day period, good for first place at the weekend box office but below even the first movie in the franchise, which earned $70.5 million during its first weekend in theaters.

The Last Knight, which Paramount says cost $217 million to make before a major marketing spend, is the latest summer sequel to spring an oil leak, at least in the USA, coming in 31 percent behind Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).

"Transformers: The Last Knight" from Paramount and Hasbro is projected to earn $196.2 million by Sunday from 41 global markets. And reviews — though never much of a factor in "Transformers" land — were worse for "The Last Knight" than the earlier films. Sofia Coppola's "The Beguiled" remake from Focus Features played at four theaters this weekend, and should gross $240,545 with a strong per screen average before it expands to over 500 locations next weekend.

But where most of Michael Bay's movies are merely bad, The Last Knight is spectacularly bad, bad in such a knowing, deliberate way, bad with such steroidal intensity, that it breaks through into a hitherto unknown dimension of badness. "Transformers" cost at least $350 million to make and market worldwide, with the cost shouldered by Paramount and a variety of financing partners, including the Chinese film company Huahua Media. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock). Audiences gave this one a B-plus CinemaScore. Almost a month after opening, Patty Jenkins' "Wonder Woman" continues to be a major draw.

Next week should be an interesting weekend as we get a slew of new releases.

"Wonder Woman" and "Cars 3" tied for second place, each claiming $25.1 million this weekend. I'm not sure $60 million is low enough to call time of death on the series, but I'm guessing Paramount will think twice before throwing $215 million at the sixth film.

The Big Sick is another victory for Amazon Studios, following Oscar contender Manchester by the Sea. He said that worldwide audiences like to see films set on a global stage. And at $652.9 million globally, it's the highest grossing film directed by a woman, not accounting for inflation. The film earned a score of 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest of the series so far. The latter pic is expected to be a behemoth and has already rolled out in its first six markets overseas, earning $18.9 million to date.
