American Red Cross: Blood Shortage Emergency Continues

This blood drive comes when the Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for donors of all types to give now so patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatments they need.

While thousands of people from across the country responded to the emergency request for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July, a critical blood shortage remains. If you give July 26 through August 31, you'll get a $5 Target eGiftCard™.

Interested donors can go on-line at RedCross.org or call to make an appointment.

"The blood supply is like a cell phone battery, it constantly needs recharging", said Christy Peters, external communications manager of the Northern Ohio Blood Services Region.

Welch said she hopes communities will step up and fill the shortage, emphasizing the short time it takes for someone to donate blood on a given day. Scheduling an appointment and completing an online RapidPass questionnaire can reduce the time it takes to donate.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities July 25-Aug. The Red Cross must collect almost 14,000 blood donations every day for patients at about 2,600 hospitals across the country. When he arrived for his second blood transfusion, he was told the blood he needed was not available.

"If it wasn't for the generosity of volunteer blood donors, I would not be here today", he said.
