Bluetooth Now Supports Mesh Networking That May Spread Across Buildings

Decluttering and going wireless seems to be the norm of the day and Bluetooth's upgrade comes at the right time when the business of Smart Home devices is booming, with greater acceptance of the tech among the masses.

"In the same way the connected device market experienced rapid growth after the introduction of Bluetooth Low Energy, we believe Bluetooth mesh networking can play a vital role in helping early stage markets, such as building automation and wireless sensor networks, experience more rapid growth", he added. As devices on a mesh network can communicate with others on the network, data can be passed between them even when one or more of those devices is outside the range of a network hub, providing superior network range versus that of a traditional hub network typically used with a Wi-Fi router at its center.

The new mesh networking specification, as well as the tools required to qualify Bluetooth products with mesh networking support, will be available at the Bluetooth website.

We all know Bluetooth technology because of the myriad ways it allows us to connect our devices, whether for data or control.

In an unprecedented move, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) today announced that Bluetooth now supports mesh networking.

The new support on Qualcomm Bluetooth mesh allows SIG networking to act compatibly with all other devices in a mesh network. "With Bluetooth mesh, we can continue to develop new, innovative uses for lighting that will improve peoples' lives". But with mesh networking up to 32,000 Bluetooth devices will be able to spread across a building or an entire block, to create a single wireless network.

"A smart lighting platform built on top of Bluetooth mesh networking can also support asset tracking, point of interest, and way-finding services". The maintenance of beacon and sensor networks will be much more efficient with the mesh capability.

The wireless sensor network (WSN) market is growing fast. "Bluetooth mesh and Bluetooth Low Energy will expand the size and functionality of the lighting control market".
