Did the TSA Ban Comic-Con Fans From Bringing Home Comic Books?

Did the TSA Ban Comic-Con Fans From Bringing Home Comic Books?

Turns out that's not really a restriction, according to the TSA and the airline.

There, United had posted a sign, "Comic-con attendees, remove all books from your checked bags".

A TSA spokesperson told The Consumerist that it would contact any airlines that promoted this "rule", but as far as we know, only United posted anything about it. Dankers described a previous incident where Southwest Airlines incorrectly advised against packing glossy magazines, but said it was unrelated.

Initially, the airline responded to the tweet saying it was a restriction set forth by the TSA.

Captain America, Thor and Spiderman found themselves on the wrong end of a mistaken United Airlines ban as USA pop culture institution Comic-Con wrapped up in San Diego on Monday.

But the TSA said nope, don't blame us.

It linked the tweet to a June 28 blog which said it had tested the removal of books at two airport locations but this was no longer underway and it had no intention of bringing in the procedures.

It's unclear. But The Verge points to a set of TSA travel tips from last year's Comic-Con that may have led to the United mishap.

USA media speculated United had misinterpreted 2016 guidelines issued by the TSA which suggested stacks of brochures and comic books be taken in carry-on bags. Needless to say, fans-many of whom are also super collectors of new, rare and vintage comic books-were not pleased and took to Twitter to vent their dismay.

UPDATE July 24 5:11 p.m. PT: United told Mashable Monday evening it regrets any inconvenience to passengers.

But, shortly after the popular event closed, Twitter became flooded with claims that fans were told they could not have comic books in their checked luggage. "We misunderstood TSA's instructions and regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers".
