Israel Removes Metal Detectors from Jerusalem's Haram al-Sharif

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security Cabinet on Sunday evening.

Despite the removal of the offending equipment, Muslim officials said worshippers should continue a boycott for now.

Turkey said on Monday that Israel was violating human rights at al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and called on global powers to take a unified stance in response. Israel will pay up to 100 million shekels, about $30 million, over the next six months to install the new devices, which include sensitive security cameras.

"This movement is a movement of the street", said Sheikh Raed Dana of the Islamic Waqf organisation, which administers the holy compound.

Using the July 14 gunfight as a pretext, Israel set up metal detectors and surveillance cameras at entrances to the al-Aqsa compound. They see it as a move by Israel to assert more control over the sacred site and as a violation of longstanding access arrangements. They refused to enter the compound in protest and prayed in the streets outside instead.

The mosque was reopened after two days, with Israel installing metal detectors and cameras at its gates.

"The Israel Police does not use any type of camera that harms privacy in any way and has no intention of using such cameras in the future", the statement said.

Later today, Netanyahu is supposed to speak with Jordanian King Abdullah II, who is now on a tour of the US West Coast.

Erdogan said protection of the Muslim holy site is not a just a matter about whether it is possible to do more to protect but a matter of faith.

"They have the potential to have catastrophic costs well beyond the walls of the Old City, well beyond Israel and Palestine, well beyond the Middle East itself".

The spike in tensions, and the deaths of three Israelis and four Palestinians in violence on Friday and Saturday, have triggered global alarm and prompted the United Nations Security Council to convene a meeting for Monday to seek ways of calming the situation.

Nicolay Mladenov also warned that "the dangers on the ground will escalate" if the crisis over Israel's installation of metal detectors isn't resolved by the time of Muslim prayers on Friday.

Jordan insisted on questioning the security guard, while Israel said he had diplomatic immunity.

The guard arrived back in Israel late Monday along with other embassy staff, apparently after an agreement was brokered.

"They (metal detectors) will remain". "It is our responsibility to support them because Al-Aqsa belongs not only to the Palestinians - it also belongs to Muslims worldwide", he said.

The Israeli government is expected to agree with the Jordanian's demand to remove the metal detectors at the Temple Mount for the return of the Israeli security guard who shot a Jordanian dead.

They continued on Saturday, leaving two more Palestinians dead.

On the same day, a Palestinian stabbed three Israelis in the occupied West Bank after vowing on Facebook to take up his knife and heed "Al-Aqsa's call".

He said that the Israeli government is "playing with fire and creating a major crisis" in the Arab and Muslim world through the imposition of security measures to enter the the Noble Sanctuary of Jerusalem.
