Reliance Jio 4G VoLTE feature phone to be made by Intex

A 4G VoLTE-enabled handset, the Reliance Jio feature phone is said to be aimed at feature phone users who have not been able to move to the Jio network because of the prohibitory costs of smartphones. The video watching experience might not be all that great on a 2.4-inch display, but Jio will most likely look at this as a tasting menu for these users to opt for larger phones and better data packages in the future. Jio seems to have signed up with Intex in order to make these feature phones. It will be a subsidy model.

"We will launch this 4G feature phone in this quarter, but will not be selling it standalone in the market".

It has been mentioned that the handset will run a forked version of Firefox OS known as KaiOS, which in turn could receive Jio branding when it officially reaches the markets. For sometime, we have seen leaks around the Reliance Jio 4G VoLTE enabled feature phone and it remains to be seen whether this will be finally unveiled. Intex has responded to a recent query on the order size for the 4G feature phone saying that it will first test a few units, before mass-producing the same for commercial goal. "We are in dialogue with Reliance Jio for bundling which should be through very soon", Nidhi Markanday, director and business head, Intex Technologies, told ET. And the same is said by the Intex that the phone will be of Rs.500 approximately. One, it will help the new entrant regain momentum in terms of bringing in more subscribers into its fold. The phone is expected to roll out in the market in August. The company has registered over 112 million subscribers as of April 2017.
