Your experience will be mostly cerebral, pondering the alignment of the moon, sun and Earth during the partial solar eclipse. You do not just see a total solar eclipse. That will be a big deal for us!

"I'm not really sure if we have a forecast model or if we'll have to make manual adjustments", said Mike Bardou, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

In the centuries that followed, solar eclipses continued to be seen as harbingers of disaster or death. Add to that the capability to stream the event globally, and you have what will likely be the largest audience for any eclipse ever.

One fascinating thing about eclipses is that they occur in pairs. NASA will broadcast the eclipse at www.nasa.gov/eclipselive.

When daylight slowly surrendered into darkness during a solar eclipse in ancient times, some civilizations believed the spectacle was the result of an enormous creature devouring the sun. While more than 99% of the sun will be blocked...it's NOT TOTAL. Destinations in the path of the August 21 eclipse, which will be visible in the USA along a narrow path from OR to SC, are going wild with plans for festivals, concerts and viewing parties.

"Maybe (the eclipse) will inspire some kid, some new genius to get into science", Espenak said.

He knows from experience. It will be an interesting astronomical event but not as dramatic as totality.

It's known in the trade as solar blindness or solar retinopathy - not total blindness, rather more like age-related macular degeneration, where you have trouble reading or recognizing faces, or lose those abilities altogether. Now he hopes kids will be inspired to carry the torch into the future. An even longer duration total solar eclipse will cross the United States from Northern California to Florida in 2045. "I think these days people use the word "awesome" to mean cool or neat, but I think the word "awesome" was inspired by seeing a total eclipse. Because we expect gridlock, we don't want to add bottlenecks that slow traffic further", said David House, a spokesman with Oregon DOT's Motor Carrier Transportation Division told Transport Topics. "That is awesome. Everything else pales in comparison".

In small or remote destinations, hotels and campsites in the path of totality are completely sold out.

A limited number of eclipse glasses will be available for visitors to use but they encourage you to purchase your own eclipse glasses prior to the event. In reality though...if we can get a return back to more "typical" August weather... Eclipses were thought to be harmful to pregnant women. Illinois State Police anticipate many people will hit the roads to see the eclipse in its totality. A deep partial eclipse will be great fun too, despite their being no Totality.

We can't know what the future will hold - whether kids will truly find inspiration in totality, or whether our divisions will heal - but we seem destined to be affected, to some degree, by this cosmic alignment.
