Arsenal edge past Leicester in Premier League season opener

The 2017-2018 season of the league will get under way on Friday when Arsenal host 2016 champions Leicester City at Emirates Stadium in London. Both sides are talented but Arsenal is probably the better team and is also at home.

Albrighton crossed for Jamie Vardy to put Leicester ahead after Xhaka had gifted the ball straight to him. Danny Welbeck tied the score in the dying seconds of the first half. Mourinho is a manager who likes more ball practice, playing ball possession and playing short games.

Vardy notched his second of the evening with a fine glancing header from a Riyad Mahrez corner on 56 minutes to give Craig Shakespeares side a slender advantage. "If you were a manager and you were on the bench, 3-2 down with 20 minutes to go and you win 4-3, you're more happy than concerned you know".

The Gunners broke the deadlock inside two minutes when Lacazette marked his league debut with a goal by heading home Mohamed Elneny's cross.

Before that though, Vardy stunned Arsene Wenger's men with two goals and Shinji Okazaki also went on the score sheet to nearly punished Arsenal which played without star forward Alexis Sanchez because of injury. Familiarity may very well breed contempt, but even after two decades Wenger deserves more than his share of the credit for changing the game. If he sticks with one man up front, then Giroud will be behind Lacazette and Sanchez in the pecking order.

"I know Matic is 29 and cost £40m, but he has got at least another two or three good years left in him, and he is exactly what United needed in midfield", Shearer told BBC Sport.

Arsene Wenger saw substitute Olivier Giroud score a late victor to see off Leicester before admitting he gave the striker a chance to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer. "In the end he made a decision to stay and it was one of the great days of the recent weeks for me". Personally I think he is a hugely talented player, he's on the way up and he will continue to move up because the potential is there.

Speaking to Arsenal's official website after the game, Wenger said: "At some stage it didn't look like that, no".
