Australian Police Foil Apparent Terrorist Plot To Take Down Plane

Australian Police Foil Apparent Terrorist Plot To Take Down Plane

Huge queues at Sydney Airports T2 Domestic Terminal as passengers are subjected to increased security, Sydney, Australia, Monday, July 31, 2017.

The four men arrested over the alleged plot are yet to be charged, as more details about how they were caught comes to light.

But Sydney Airport's plan takes that further, linking the same facial recognition system with every other touchpoint throughout the terminal, including baggage drop, admission to the security screening queues, clearing passport control without a passport, completing duty-free purchases and even entering airline lounges document-free. "I'm very satisfied that we've implemented that advice in the best possible way", he said.

"The increased security measures at the airports are a response to that".

"It may be that we need to look at the security settings at our airports, in particular our domestic airports, for an ongoing, enduring period", Mr Dutton said.

'In some countries, when you travel you have to have photographic ID when you present to board a plane - in Australia you don't'.

The alleged plot has also raised longstanding security fears over the amount of automation at modern airports meaning customers can book online, get boarding passes automatically and get on flights without having to identify themselves to groundstaff.

Turnbull has urged people to arrive much earlier for domestic and global flights from all Australian airports and to limit carry-on and checked-in baggage.

Global travellers should arrive three hours before their fight departure time.

Despite the disruption to business, Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief James Pearson said he recognised the safety and security of the travelling public had to come first.

"Travellers should be prepared for additional scrutiny at screening points, and while it is important that Australians are aware of the increased threat, be assured we have the finest security and intelligence services in the world and they are working, as is my government, and all our governments around Australia, night and day to keep Australians safe", he said.

Qantas confirmed today passengers should arrive much earlier for domestic Australian flights in order to deal with new security protocols in place following police raids that authorities say disrupted a suspected terrorist cell plotting an attack on an aircraft.
