Canada Minister Spoke to North Korean Counterpart Ahead of Pastor's Release

Canada Minister Spoke to North Korean Counterpart Ahead of Pastor's Release

"It's time for North Korea to really cease its actions". Earlier this week, Trump said the country's threats against the US would be met with "fire and fury". Trump doubled down on the tough talk later Friday.

Lim arrived in Toronto in the late morning Saturday, and is "landed and resting", according to a press release from his family.

"It is important to be clear from the Canadian perspective that we stand by our allies when they are threatened, very much including the United States", Freeland told reporters in Edmonton Friday afternoon, after being asked about Trump's inflammatory language.

"What North Korea is doing is absolutely unacceptable, and it's posing an unacceptable security threat both in the region and to the entire world", she said.

Freeland said Canada is "working with our worldwide partners to seek a resolution, a de-escalation" in the situation.

Lim's return to Canada comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, though there authorities have not said there is any connection.

In direct conversations with North Korea and through China, Freeland said Canada sought to "get North Korea to understand that it must get off this path, which is so destructive for North Korea and the world". "That is a very separate and distinct issue".

Lim (62) was imprisoned in North Korea in 2015. He had been sentenced to hard labour for what it called crimes against the state.

The Toronto resident Lim started the Light Korean Presbyterian Church nearly 30 years ago.
