Coloradans with family in Guam anxious about North Korea threats

The Patriot PAC-3 surface-to-air interceptors wouldn't be able to intercept the North Korean missiles - they would be well outside of the system's range - but could target any pieces of the rockets that might fall over western and southern Japan if the launches failed, officials said.

The Japan Times reports that Patriot missiles are being placed along the west coast of the country to make good on Japan's promise to intercept any missiles North Korea fires at Guam.

Previous to this assessment, the Central Intelligence Agency believed that North Korean warheads did not have this capability. These small payloads allowed the rockets to be lofted to far higher altitudes than they would have if loaded with a much-heavier warhead, creating the impression that North Korea was on the cusp of achieving ICBM capability.

In a separate statement attached to the article, Postol, an expert in ballistic missile defense, stated that while existing ballistic missile defenses "will never work reliably", there is still time to develop a defense system with available US technology.

As tensions between the United States and North Korea continue to escalate, a southern IL woman worries about her family on the U.S. Island territory of Guam.

Of course, if North Korea launches weapons at Japan, or an errant missile threatens to drop on Japanese territory, both of those systems will have roles to play.

Trump suggested a report on more funding for missile defense could be coming in the next week, which Karako said could be a sign that the Pentagon completed its preliminary study from its missile defense review.

North Korea announced Thursday a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to U.S. bombers, a move that if carried out would be its most provocative missile launch to date.

Missile defense is an attractive but tricky strategy in dealing with missile threats. But a current USA boost-phase capability hasn't been fielded. The U.S. bases another TPY-2 at Andersen Air base in Guam. "We are going to be increasing the anti-missiles by a substantial amount of billions of dollars".

"If one of those options is a pre-emptive war on the Korean Peninsula launched by the USA, that would require authorization from Congress. Article I of the Constitution, in my view, makes this clear", Sullivan said.

"To be perfectly honest, I didn't think it would come this fast" that the country became focused on escalating North Korean nuclear capabilities, he said.

She pointed to a review of the nation's ballistic missile defense that is underway at the Pentagon, and said that is likely to provide "a pathway forward to further missile defense improvements".

Murkowski said she'd seek to do that through her position on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

If "Kim Jong Un made a decision to launch an ICBM at the United States, I believe we have the system right now to shoot that down - to track it and shoot it down", Sullivan said.
