Cuomo Donor Makes Racist Remark About Black State Senator

News, views and commentary on Long Island, state and national politics.

A hedge fund manager and prominent political donor made a racial remark in reference to a black Democrat leader in NY, saying she has done "more damage to people of color than anyone who has ever donned a hood".

Daniel Loeb said on Facebook than Sen.

A billionaire hedge fund manager has apologized for saying that a black NY state senator has "done more damage to people of color than anyone who has ever donned a hood" because of her support for teachers unions.

That triggered a forceful rebuke Friday.

Stewart-Cousins' spokesman said Loeb should be "ashamed of his disgusting comments".

Loeb has since taken the post down from Facebook. George Latimer (D-Rye) called them "rude and racist". "I apologize to Sen". He later deleted the post and apologized.

"I regret the language I used in expressing my passion for educational choice", Loeb told the newspaper in a statement.

Mr. Klein leads a group of eight Democrats who in 2011 broke away from the main Democratic conference, led by Ms. Stewart-Cousins.

Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, speaks during a news conference on ethics reforms legislation on Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, in Albany, N.Y. "You see my black skin and a woman, but you don't realize I am a suburban legislator", Stewart-Cousins said, according to the Times.

Both the senator and Cuomo's office later released statements saying there was no racial tension in the discussion.

A report from Politico this afternoon says that he will continue in that position, and adds that a spokesperson for StudentsFirstNY, a group that supports charter schools that Loeb has funded, declined to comment.

The Rev. Al Sharpton on Saturday vowed to raise hell until hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb steps down as chairman of the Success Academy charter school board.

The civil rights leader said that he is working with others to organize a picket outside Success Academy's lower Manhattan headquarters until Loeb is booted from the board.

While Loeb deleted his remarks, the Times reported the text and the AP obtained a screenshot of the post. "Meanwhile hypocrites like Stewart-Cousins who pay fealty to powerful union thugs and bosses do more damage to people of color than anyone who has ever donned a hood", he wrote.

"The statements are wrong and have to be repudiated", he said in a statement.
