Fields is in jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, The Daily Beast reported. The driver was taken into custody and later identified as James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio.

They clashed with another group of people who were opposing this rally of white nationalists. "You're talking about people who are saying that hate's not okay, kindness matters, and then they get killed for it", Detwiler said. And you did hurt people. You have made our commonwealth stronger.

One person was killed after a vehicle mowed down a group of protesters in the city of Charlottesville on Saturday while the two other victims, Virginia State Police Department officers, died when a helicopter crashed nearby, reports The Hill magazine.

Police report that three people were arrested in relation to the rally.

The governor declared a state of emergency and police dressed in riot gear in an effort to control unruly crowds.

After the deaths were announced, President Donald Trump tweeted, "Deepest condolences to the families & fellow officers of the VA State Police who died today".

Medics carried the injured, bloodied and crying, away as a police tank rolled down the street.

The state's governor Terry McAuliffe said on Friday: "Many of the individuals coming to Charlottesville tomorrow are doing so in order to express viewpoints many people, including me, find abhorrent".

"This is about an anti-white climate within the Western world and the need for white people to have advocacy like other groups do", he said in an interview. Some were said to have life-threatening injuries. After the "Unite the Right" rally descended into violence and was subsequently dispersed, a auto plowed into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing at least one person and injuring at least 19 others.

"I just knew he was going to a rally". He also said "there is no place for this kind of violence in America".

Mr Trump put out a tweet condemning "violence" and "hate" - although he did not specify that he was talking about the white supremacists, attracting criticism on Twitter. He later blamed hatred "on many sides" for the violence, prompting a furious backlash from some leading Republicans.

The city voted in April to remove the statue, a move being taken by many US cities against such Confederate memorials of the Civil War era.

The city has become ground zero for white nationalist and other protesters, who faced larger counter-rallies in the past.
