Draxler and van Dijk

Draxler and van Dijk

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move to sign the Netherlands worldwide throughout the summer so far but a deal has failed to materialise.

But Les Reed, Southampton's vice chairman (football), appeared to rule out an exit by saying he hoped Hoedt would develop "alongside his worldwide team mate Virgil van Dijk" at the club.

'We believe he can develop even further here at Southampton, alongside his global teammate Virgil van Dijk, as well as the likes of Jack Stephens, Maya Yoshida, Jan Bednarek and Florin Gardos'.

Liverpool were forced to apologise to Southampton in an embarrassing statement back in June and the Reds officially ended their interest in the 26-year-old.

Liverpool were interested in Van Dijk earlier this summer before they released a statement apologising to Southampton amid tapping-up allegations.

Van Dijk could be one of several new arrivals at Stamford Bridge over the coming days as the Telegraph say Conte wants at least new arrivals with Danny Drinkwater, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ross Barkley, Cedric Soares, Antonio Candreva, Serge Aurier and Alex Sandro all named as potential targets. Liverpool obviously want the player.

"Unfortunately I feel that I have no alternative after I was given notice of the club's intention to impose a disciplinary sanction on me of a fine equivalent to two weeks' wages".

Liverpool have routinely signed Southampton's best players in recent years, with Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren all making the switch from St. Mary's to Anfield.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's first Premier League home game at Wembley ends in defeat, as they lost 2-1 against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Merseyside outfit will host Hoffenheim in the second leg of their Champions League playoff after a 2-1 win in Germany last week.
