England defeats France in Women's Rugby World Cup semifinal

England defeats France in Women's Rugby World Cup semifinal

England women's Rugby Union team, including Keswick's Abbie Scott, will get a chance to defend their title in this Saturday's World Cup Final.

But the Red Roses took control after the restart as converted tries from Sarah Bern and Megan Jones, along with another penalty from Scarratt, steered them to victory.

Simon Middleton's side produced a superb display at the Kingspan Stadium to see off the battling French, who saw off host nation Ireland in their last game.

A succession of pick and drives near the France line saw Sarah Bern crash over for the first try of the game and her first at worldwide level.

France dominated large periods of the semi-final's opening 40 minutes, yet they floundered on a magnificent England defence that time and time again denied their opponents.

"We had a white wall and there was no way they were getting across our try line tonight".

"We had to fight every inch of the way but I'm absolutely thrilled".

Scarratt moved England back ahead as France's defence wilted after a 20-phase surge, making it 6-3, before their hard work in attack paid off.

"Our defence won that game, there was never any concern it our minds that France were going to cross our tryline".

England will bid to be crowned back-to-back world champions in Saturday's title match and their captain Sarah Hunter said: "It's fantastic that we've come and done the job that we wanted to do". France came at us and they've given us the greatest test we've had so far in this tournament.
