European Union extends pressure on North Korea

European Union extends pressure on North Korea

EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini will chair the meeting of the Political and Security Committee slated for Monday, to discuss a variety of issues over the North, the EU said in a statement issued on Friday.

The European Union says it has slapped sanctions on nine North Koreans and four entities including the state-owned Foreign Trade Bank, in addition to those already on its sanctions list.

The resolution was adopted last week in response to North Korea's on-going development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile activities.

North Korea has condemned the latest United Nations sanctions, saying they violate its sovereignty.

The warning is the latest in an exchange of bellicose rhetoric that has heightened concerns about a possible conflict between Washington and Pyongyang. "Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!"

After intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests of missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland were carried out by North Korea last week, the United Nations imposed its "most stringent" restrictions so far with the intention of cutting almost $1bn out of the country's export revenue. Pyongyang has promised a "fair response" to the sanctions, without specifying, however, what it will be.

New sanctions against North Korea imposed in connection with the testing of Intercontinental ballistic missiles, which Pyongyang has held in July. "They should be very nervous", Trump said on Thursday.
