Go home, shame on you: Virginia Governor to white supremacists

One person died and 19 were injured after a vehicle plowed through a crowd here on Saturday.

White nationalists gathered in Charlottesville for the "Unite the Right" protest aimed at stopping the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, which city council voted to remove from a park formerly named after the Confederate leader in April.

The most recent incident came after torch-wielding white nationalists marched through the University of Virginia campus on Friday night.

Some protesters carried Confederate flags and chanted "you will not replace us".

Though they were outnumbered by hundreds of jeering counter-protesters, the extreme right marchers - some donning the traditional white hood of the notorious white power group - saw their images spread worldwide on social media.

Officials have said one person was killed while 19 were hurt when a speeding auto slammed into a throng of counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday, August 12, 2017.

The collision followed a morning of violent clashes between far-right groups and counterprotesters, prompting Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency.

Between rally attendees and counter-protesters, authorities were expecting as many as 6,000 people, Charlottesville police said this week.

Donald Trump, addressing the situation from his private golf club in New Jersey, declined to condemn white nationalism and instead said the blame for the violence lies with "many sides".

Several members of Congress urged the president to refer to violence in central Virginia with stronger language after the commander in chief decried the egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence.

"The president said that "what is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives".

"It's been going on for a long time in our country", he continued. Our message is plain and simple: "go home", McAuliffe told a news conference.

Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer said he was disgusted that the white nationalists had come to his town and blamed Trump for inflaming racial prejudices.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who has been a favorite of Republican conservatives, issued a statement in which he called on the Justice Department to "immediately investigate and prosecute today's grotesque act of domestic terrorism".

President Donald Trump sent his condolences to the families of the officers and their colleagues in the Virginia State Police.
