Guliyev stuns van Niekerk with shock 200m win

Guliyev stuns van Niekerk with shock 200m win

The 25-year-old South African 400 metres world record holder just missed out on emulating Johnson's feat of the 200/400m world championship double, which the American achieved in the 1995 championships, when he took silver in the 200 metres on Thursday behind surprise victor Ramil Guliyev of Turkey.

The 25-year-old 400m world record holder held the lead with 80 metres to go, but Ramit Guliyev of Turkey produced a fantastic surge to move past Van Niekerk by a narrow margin to win in 20.09 seconds.

Britain had a better evening in the women's 200m, as Dina Asher-Smith qualified for Friday's final in a season's best time of 22.73.

The IAAF received a written request from the Botswanan federation for Makwala to compete in the 200m.

Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago also finished at 20.11 and claimed bronze medal on photo finish. Makwala endured more disappointment after so many questions had been asked over why he could not run in the 400m.

There was nearly a massive shock in the closing semi-final where 400m champion Wayde van Niekerk had to rely on a fastest loser berth to reach the final.

"I was feeling good but the last 50m I was feeling exhausted". "I'd like to see more than just myself come through". Nelson Evora of Portugal bagged the bronze in 17.19.

"I have this watch from my sponsor with 18.30 on it". "I've shown enough dominance, I've shown enough hard work, enough performances to start building my own brand". The record is still on.

"I'm still running with the heart broken", he added.

"My motivation is to be the best athlete". "Honestly, I was glad to get a medal. just to get a medal here is a great achievement".

Van Niekerk was aiming to achieve the 200m-400m double, a feat last achieved at the world championships by American Michael Johnson back in 1995. Two-time world champion and title defender Zuzana Hejnova of Czech Republic had to settle for the fourth place in 54.20.

"I am a gambler, I love going to the casino", said Bosse. What a blessing to be world champion.

Mo Farah headlined the qualifiers into Saturday's 5000m final, which will be the last championship track race of his career before moving to road racing.

Schippers eased to victory with an imperious run, looking very much capable of retaining her title on Friday as she clocked 22.49secs.

The defending 400m champion won comfortably in the one-lap final, winding down on the home straight ahead of his 200m semi-final on Wednesday (9.55pm SA time).
