Himachal Pradesh landslide: Six killed, rescue operations underway

Eight bodies have been recovered, including the driver and the conductor of Chamba depot Chanden Sharma and Satpal, respectively.

Rescue operations are underway.

The landslide occurred around 12.20am on the Mandi-Pathankot highway near Kotropi village in Jogindernagar tehsil, burying two Himachal Road Transport Corporation buses, some private vehicles and several houses.

The landslide hit Himachal Pradesh's Mandi on Saturday where four people were rescued from the debris.

At least a dozen small vehicles are also trapped. Some families said they lost their cattle in the landslide. He also said that the rescue operations is going on war footing.

"The landslide debris fell on two moving state transport buses".

One of the buses was on its way from Chamba to Manali and the other from Manali to Katra.

The number of passengers in the buses could be between 30 and 40 as the number of passengers who boarded the bus en route was not known. "Efforts are on to rescue the trapped passengers", DIG, Northern Range, Ajay Kumar Yadav said. Earlier 45 bus passengers were buried in a landslide near Matiyana in Shimla district in 1988 and 42 passengers were buried in another mishap at Luggar Hati in Kullu district in 1994. The local administration has warned of more landslides on the Chandigarh-Manali highway.
