History can't be denied, but it can be put in context

Duke University has removed a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from the entrance of an on-campus chapel. In April, New Orleans did the same and the city's mayor, Mitch Landrieu, eloquently explained why.

Thus, remnants of its many battles remain, mainly in the south.

I have to disagree.

Mayor Mike Signer issued his appeal amid an increasingly contentious debate over what to do with memorials to Confederate figures, who fought for the preservation of slavery during the U.S. Civil War, that are seen by opponents as offensive.

Now a group claiming ancestry from a Confederate veteran named Moses Jacob Ezekiel, who was a renowned sculptor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is asking that one of his most prominent works be taken down.

"I think there needs to be a voice heard on both sides", Rochette said. They are symbols of an evil cause. They fought against our country.

New Orleans removed a Confederate monument in May.

Dr Gerald Horne, an African-American historian at the University of Houston, emphasised on MSNBC's The Beat last week: "These statues were erected not only because they were created to express white power but also antipathy and animosity to the newly freed enslaved population, not only because of white supremacy but because the abolition of slavery represented the confiscation of private property without compensation".

Recently, M. Yvonne Taylor wrote a great piece about her feelings on the subject. We can not deny this, just as we can not deny the Civil War, as it is sadly a part of that history.

Nor should you deny that these people are white supremacists. Can they really tell black people who interpret it differently - who look at that statue, erected in the same period as "The Birth of a Nation" and the second Ku Klux Klan, and see a public display of contempt for their dignity and rights - that their reaction is absurd?

More than a half-dozen have been taken down since last week.

The monuments should go. These men do not deserve to be honored for fighting against the nation they swore to protect. If you believe that the left will stop at Confederate statues, I've got a wonderful bridge in NY that I'd like to sell you.

In other words, opposition to Confederate monuments is an unpopular position, held primarily and nearly exclusively on the Left.

White supremacist marches have renewed the conversation about what should happen to symbols of the Confederacy. Those are important distinctions. "It doesn't unify us", she said. Because we're at a point where white guys probably need to shut up and listen. In a completely unrelated event, the Southern Poverty Law Center has just labeled 44% of black Americans as a "hate group".

History is rarely a topic of consensus even in homogeneous societies. The fact that it is for many whites is telling.

So lets get together and debate what we are trying to tear down, and what we are trying to preserve.

They went up to intimidate a race or show the power of another. Ku Klux Klan members, neo-Nazis and militiamen brawled in the streets with counterprotesters before one of them, James Alex Fields Jr., 20, drove his vehicle through a crowd of people, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer. This feels like one of those pivotal moments.
