How North Korea might respond to US, South Korea war games

How North Korea might respond to US, South Korea war games

Last week North Korea appeared to back down from a threat to send missiles towards the US Pacific island of Guam, but said it would watch US actions.

Despite some calls to postpone or drastically modify drills to ease the hostility on the Korean Peninsula, US and South Korean military officials say that the long-scheduled exercises will go ahead as planned. The US-South Korea joint war game would last till the end of this month.

When it comes to the fundamentals, North Korea is surprisingly predictable, despite caricatures of Kim Jong-un as a madman with a finger on the nuclear trigger. Tillerson warned of a bleak isolation if North Korea did not reengage the worldwide community.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull earlier this month vowed that his country's military would fight alongside the United States if the latter was attacked by North Korea.

Tension over North Korea has risen substantially in recent weeks, as the USA and North Korea engaged in a "war of words".

Kim Jong-un's regime has reportedly been stockpiling a huge cache of deadly substances, including sarin and VX, that could be used on United States military bases in Asia.

Yesterday, Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis welcomed their counterparts from Japan to Washington for a security summit, where Mattis re-iterated the American, and Japanese, promise of an "effective and overwhelming response" to any hostilities from North Korea.

Marking 100 days in office with his first press conference as president, Moon said that Kim Jong Un's regime is approaching South Korea's "red line". Setting aside the scientific debate on whether North Korea actually has the technology to launch nuclear-mounted ICBMs, I do not think North Korea is "crazy" enough to use nuclear weapons in the first place. Not necessarily. USA officials argue that the credit should go to Mattis' blunt clarity, Dunford's reassuring steadiness and Tillerson's patient diplomacy.

"North Korea must understand that its repeated provocations are forcing them to conduct defensive exercises, which in turn keeps the vicious cycle going", he said.

He quoted historian Bruce Cumings: "Most Americans are completely unaware that we destroyed more cities in the North then we did in Japan or Germany during World War II".

"North Korea must understand that it is because of its repeated provocations that South Korea and the USA have to conduct defensive exercises, which in turn keeps the vicious cycle going", Moon was quoted as saying at a Cabinet meeting on Monday by Yonhap News Agency.

Specifically, "the USA dropped 635,000 tons of explosives on North Korea, including 32,557 tons of napalm, an incendiary liquid that can clear forested areas and cause devastating burns to human skin", Tom O'Connor wrote recently in Newsweek. There will be no field training during the exercise, according to U.S. Forces Korea.

Tensions have soared on the peninsula in recent months, with Pyongyang carrying out its first successful tests of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), bringing much of the United States within range. This includes China, whose border area with North Korea, ABC notes, has suffered a significant decline in cheap and plentiful seafood since the sanctions took hold.

"If North Korea carries out a sixth nuclear weapons test, China will likely cut oil supplies to North Korea". But he said the campaign of economic and diplomatic pressure against North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs needs to be backed by "strong military consequences if North Korea chooses wrongly".
