How to help pets after a disaster

Animal lovers and rescue groups are rushing to help the relief effort in Texas, hoping to make sure four-footed family pets aren't left behind as the state grapples with Hurricane Harvey.

Officials in Texas and Louisiana are urging evacuees not to leave their animals behind when they leave before the storm, but local volunteers say that's often how displaced animals come into their care.

One organization in CT said they will potentially leave to respond to those animals in need after the Category 4 hurricane.

After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, an estimated 15,000 pets were rescued by the New Orleans SPCA, as volunteers scooped cats and dogs off rooftops, out of the water and from flooded streets, reports CNN. All the animals now at Humane Rescue have been spayed, neutered, and implanted with microchips.

She said the local rescue alliance is ready to take in animals with "open arms and we look forward to finding forever homes for them in our nation's capital".

The Red Cross allows service animals but pets are not allowed, according to information on its website.

Mary Heerwald, the shelter's spokesperson, said Tuesday that 169 dogs and 122 cats were on their way to Austin, along with 40 other animals.

As a result of the influx of animals due to Harvey, the surrenders and long-term stays at various shelters are being shipped to nearby states to free up space. Some reported that they didn't evacuate because they were unable to take their pets.

Several groups are on route to join forces with local organizations to help animals in need.

The community can help Pets Alive by making a monetary donation online (petsalive.org); or mailing a check to Pets Alive, 363 Derby Road, Middletown, NY 10940.

There are many ways you can help the animals impacted by Harvey including hosting a fundraiser, donating, signing up for training to help with future disasters, and spreading awareness by sharing updates and links to donate.
