'I'm not going to rule out a military option' in Venezuela

A reporter asked if he meant to say the United States would lead a military operation in the South American country.

Venezuela's new Constituent Assembly on Saturday strongly backed socialist President Nicolas Maduro in the face of the "vile threats" of his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, who said United States military action was an option to quell the South American country's devastating crisis.

"We had some very good meetings, some very good ideas, very good thoughts, and a lot of decisions were made", Trump said following the briefing, without providing details. "Instead Maduro has chosen the path of dictatorship", the White House said.

With this extremist elite that's in charge in the U.S., who knows what will happen to the world?

The assault on the military base coincided with a video circulated on social media in which Caguaripano called for a general uprising against unpopular socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

Trump's remarks come after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro established a constituent assembly, which is expected to replace the country's parliament and rewrite the constitution.

Trump's comments are sure to focus new attention on Pence's upcoming six-day tour of the region, which will include stops in Cartagena, Colombia; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Santiago, Chile; and Panama City.

The Trump administration has called Maduro a "dictator" and issued sanctions against him and more than two dozen other former and current officials, accusing Maduro's government of violating human rights and undermining the country's democracy amid an escalating political and financial crisis.

The Pentagon reportedly hasn't yet received any military orders from the Trump administration on Venezuela.

"We have many options for Venezuela, this is our neighbor", Trump added.

President Trump says he is "not going to rule out" military action against Venezuela following President Nicolas Maduro's moves to consolidate power in recent weeks.
